Real People have Aspergers/Autism (for various stories from AS individuals see indent list in menu) . . - YouTube - A Brave New World -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuiaT0nX9ls&NR=1 What never seem possible in the past, often is in the future and those that dare speak out, may help change the course of what happens tomorrow, we can conform and stay stuck in the now or look for answers, because what ever happens we will progress. [It has been said that Charles Darwin is on the autism spectrum]
. . When will others realize that those of us on the autism spectrum are as diverse and different as those that are not, and in fact some of us on the autism spectrum have amazing abilities, I cannot help but wonder with the right awareness, support and understanding the next generation of autistic individuals may well be the ones to save this planet! . The majority only seems to hear about the condition when something bad happens, or extreme cases like the character in Boston Legal and every time one of us does something wrong the press feel a need to dramatize, so why not the same for the rest of the population, do the press mention every time a person is not on the autism spectrum! They often give an altered image of what we are really like, the media always seems to portray us in a stereo type way and instead of helping raise awareness they scare the majority into thinking we will never fit into a society, where many of us already do, and so we are often wrongly perceived! . There are other possible individuals on the autism spectrum, could even consider a few royals! But it tends to be you get to hear about the more extreme possible autistic minded individuals such as Michael Jackson to Bill Gates, and others such as Woody Allen, Bob Dylan, Carl Jong, Oliver Sachs but there is a whole bigger group in the middle. At the end of the day, we are all different and does it really matter. A lot of people with autism seem to find connecting with society in general the hardest, often our anxiety caused from societies lack of real understanding of who we are as individuals.... not being understood, feeling alienated from a world we were born to live in, but because often a real lack of many really accepting, allowing us for who we are, it can be extremely alienating…at times myself it has felt like I may as well be on a parallel planet! . . . Steven Spielberg is a movie director whose work includes Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. and Schindler's List...Smart, powerful, fearless yet sweet! . .. Bill Gates - There are a bunch of youtube videos of the Microsoft anti-trust deposition in '98. He seems to behave fairly autistically to me when he's answering questions. This one in particular shows him rocking in a manner that seems to be stimming due to the stress of the deposition. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qNVe024RvI&feature=related I feel its quite likely. . There are so many remarkable people who also fit the profile of Aspergers; some of the well known ones are Albert Einstein (Aspie / Dyslexic), Isaac Newton, Hans Christian Andersen, Thomas Jefferson, Lewis Carroll, JWM Turner and lots more… Does anyone have the right to choose, or decide what or who is right in this world – we really do need to think about the perils of genetic testing and prejudgment, because we need special gifted people for evolution – wouldn’t life be boring if we were all the same? . Albert Einstein 'found genius through autism http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/main.jhtml?xml=/earth/2008/02/21/sciaut121.xml . List of people on the autistic spectrum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia . . Famous People on the Autism Spectrum Aspergers Syndrome is not fully understood by many, yet! And is at times viewed, as a syndrome with both advantages and disadvantages. So it is illuminating to learn of people with similar characteristics to ourselves, especially when those people are successful or well-known. Notable adults who may have Aspergers Syndrome or Autistic have achieved success in their fields. To be honest I can see correlations within even the royal family! . I have heard actors John Cleese (Basil Fawlty), Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean) and-Leonard Nimoy (Mr Spock) could be on the autism spectrum, also Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Hans Aspergers and even Satoshi Tajiri ! and it has been said more recent Richard Borcherds, mathematician specializing in group theory and Lie algebras and Craig Nicholls, frontman of the band The Vines Gary Numan, British singer and songwriter and Ladyhawke (see below) are on the Autism spectrum. Dan Aykroyd, comedian and actor: Aykroyd stated he has Asperger's, but some feel he was joking. ! . . The mere fact that it is widely believed that Albert Einstein, Henry Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, Alexander Graham Bell, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Wolfgang Mozart, Andy Warhol and lots of other famous artists had traits of the condition is proof enough that Aspergers Syndrome is a gift and not a curse. Look how successful Bill Gates is as an I.T. Giant, and despite other possibly “unpleasant” characteristics, look how brilliant another suspected Aspie, Michael Jackson, was as the king of Pop. . Other famous notable people from the past and present who might have had or might have traits of the condition are: writers such as Jane Austen and Virginia Woolf, musicians such as Bob Dylan and Beethoven, inventors such as Thomas Edison and finally scientists such as Sir Issace Newton, John Nash and Alan Turing (the inventor of the first electronic computer). And there are lots more, can you name some in comments below! . . Adjust Society to Autism not Mind to Society It doesn't mean you shouldn't try your best to adapt though! , . Different types of aspies = different types of intelligence? Been thinking about this folks. Don't know if any of you are familiar with Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Basically he says there are 8 sorts of intelligence - Linguistic/Verbal, Mathematical/Logical, Spatial/Visual, Musical, Kinesthetic/Body, Naturist, Interpersonal and Intrapersonal. . Obviously, we are going to be poor in Interpersonal, and most of us would be poor in the Kinesthetic area too - not that many athletes among us! (A few dancers tho, i think?) But the rest, i see us falling into the following groups:- 1. Linguistic/verbal. If you're into literature, languages and linguistics, or the humanities and social sciences (history, sociology, psychology, etc), you have this intelligence. These are our writers, public speakers, academics in those subjects, or just those who are fluent with words - and i suspect that it is this group of Aspies who are best able to 'present' themselves as 'nearly normal', ie who can 'pass' the best, because of that fluency. . 2. Mathematical/Logical. These Aspies are into science, math’s, computer programming and the like. They are our mathematicians, scientists, doctors, computer geeks, etc. . 3. Spatial/Visual. These ones are into art, architecture, graphic design, photography, or cartography. They are our artists, designers, architects, photographers, or people who simply love to read maps, or create them. . 4.Musical. This one is obvious - our singers, musicians or simply lovers of music. Got a good sense of rhythm? Can sing in key? Got music 'in the head'? You have this sort of intelligence. . 5. Naturist. Anyone into nature, animals, the outdoors and the environment, whether professionally or as a matter of personal interest or conviction? Forest rangers, environmentalists, vets, pet-lovers, workers for the Department of Conservation (or whatever it's called in your country), rock or bug collectors or (probably) those who retreat to the country to get away from cities and people... you have this intelligence. . 6. Intrapersonal. This intelligence is about knowing, strongly relating to and understanding oneself. If you keep a journal or diary, spend long hours in introspection or self-analysis, are happy to go to a movie by yourself or spend lots of time alone, are a deeply private person, if you are aware of your own strengths and weaknesses or see it as an important goal to be, if living by your own values and principles is important to you, then you have this intelligence. I think it is one probably highly developed among us, though possibly to varying degrees. . Okay folks what do you think? Where are you, among these types? I know i have linguistic, spatial and intrapersonal intelligence quite strongly, and some small degree of musical and logical. And maybe a little bit of naturist. The point I’m making is that there is more than one way to be intelligent, and more than one way to be Aspie too. . By an AsPlanet forum member - Join in the discussion, and / or comment below . Which type are you ? http://asplanet.info/forum/index.php?topic=1117.0 . . 8 More different types of Aspergers! Just an idea by Amy Nelson. Basically it suggests that there are eight major types of Aspergers and that aspies are usually a mix of one, two or three of these. I feel it is well thought out and an interesting concept / insight. . Note: This is not accepted research - just a set of ideas that someone put forward to help those who were self-diagnosed. . The types are named after people. I'm not sure that I agree with the list or with the descriptions. I'm even less sure that these people are definitely aspies but it is still good food for thought. I've reproduced a lot of the content and added some of my own thoughts; . 1. Spielberg (Based on Steven Spielberg) A sociable, sporty, extroverted aspie with average IQ but poor spelling and grammar. . 2. Einstein (Obviously based on Albert Einstein) An Intellectual with a high IQ and excellent spelling/grammar. They're an expert in their special interest, often good with computers and usually quite argumentative - especially in areas of special interest. . 3. Powell (Possibly? based on Enoch Powell An agressive/hostile/violent and intelligent aspie who is often bullied and may use drugs for stress. Possibly also having Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). . 4. Numan (I think based on Gary Numan) A spaced out daydreamer type who finds it difficult to understand others and is often misunderstood in return. Likely to have bonding issues and possibly bipolar. . 5. Morrissey (Presumably the singer ) A unique, artistic and creative aspie who feels separated from people and is possibly schizophrenic. These people don't fit in well with society and often feel alien or like they belong in a different time period. . 6. Nicholls (Presumably Aussie Craig Nicholls A hyperactive, energetic and extroverted aspie who has no problems making friends - just problems keeping them. These aspies are often considered to be irritating, immature and childish. Unlike many aspies, they don't have much social fear and like to talk to people. They may also have Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD). In Nicholl's case, he claims to be a compulsive liar which goes against the general honesty normally associated with aspies. . 7. Carroll (It could only be Lewis Carroll) A passive and very introverted aspie. Quiet, shy and deeply involved in their special interest. For these aspies, friends and relationships are secondary to their special interests. They're very passive, and show little emotion externally but are often very anxious inside. They're quite likely to be bullied. . 8. Warhol (From the description, this obviously Andy Warhol - not that there are any other famous Warhols anyway). A confident and egocentric aspie who is full of ideas but feels that the world misunderstands them. While friendly in formal settings, the Warhol type can become revengeful and bitter when problems occur. They could also have Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) traits. Simply a blending of several types of aspie! _________________________________________ . .
Savant skills may be widespread in people with autism . . Should we tell others about AS: I do not tell everyone but my web site is there so many know, the problem is they only read or understand as much as they want to. But at my age have spent half a life time not being understood or understanding myself, so I am very happy to of found aspergers and self and have no problem with others knowing as feel the more of us that do speak out the easier it will be for the next generation. My 15 year old is quite happy to have aspergers, but does not advertise the fact, but his friends know, do they understand - if they can be bothered and want to, they just take him for him mostly. . I can truly say others knowing has not been a problem for us, as with aspergers I have many associated condition dyslexia etc... and rather than me feeling my differences are a shameful secret, I can explain and allow my differences which has given me bucket loads more confidence... yes some people have backed away but not worth knowing anyway and on my journey have met many new wonderful people, so I say stick with likeminded people because if you have to live your life pretending to fit, it never works... . I guess we have two choices in life we can pretend and never fit any way or just get on and be, do what makes you happy... I spent a life time trying so hard to fit in, have what I thought I needed and then found a stereo type existence will never make me happy... self belief and allowing to be, many never understand me, but I not them... no one life is perfect, but if you want something to happen the only way is to take action towards where you want to end up or be, not easy I know and like myself at times I feel we have been given the short straws in life, but the tide is turning and I feel change is inevitable for us all, time to stand proud. . . Sigourney Weaver on autism A great article from Autism Diva . . . Extra thoughts – so many possibales! The list could be endless Hank Hill, and of course Star Trek's Mr Spock and Data. How about Lisa Simpson and Professor Frink? Teal'c of SG-1? The guy in "Accidental Tourist," and his family. Those kids on Eva... Shinji, Rei, probably Gendo too, Patience Phillips from "Cat woman", Jenny Johnson from "My Super-Ex Girlfriend, Peter Parker from "Spiderman", Chloe O'Brien from 24.,Seymour from Ghost World, TV-Inger from the show Help Me Help You, Cartoon-Dexter from Dexter's Lab. Kramer from Seinfeld: Kramer has poor social skills. An example would be sliding into Jerry's apartment at random. He also has been known to get outrageous ideas. Melvin? from Office space: I'm not sure if his name is Melvin though i think it is. Melvin talks in a unique speaking manner as someone with aspergers. He is very clingy to certain inanimate objects, such as his stapler that Lumberg takes from him. Count Duckula: I'm not sure if anyone remembers this British cartoon that was aired on nickelodeon in the late 80's and early 90's. Duckula is very malodramatic. He has aspergian type fixations as he is obsessed with fame and wealth. He often gets bizarre plans and ideas that often fall through, as they are usually surreal. Michelle from American Pie: Michelle speaks in a very aspergian tone. She often rambles on and on about her fixations, ie band camp. She is also known to be socially awkward at times. And of course the entire cast of 3rd Rock from the Sun would qualify as Aspie... !!! the list is endless, but do not most of us on the spectrum act to survive! (Varied WP)
. . Charles Darwin was Autistic, Claims Leading Psychiatrist General Health News - Thursday, February 19, 2009 . Charles Darwin the author of On the Origin of Species, had a form of autism which is related to creativity and originality, claims a leading psychiatrist. According to Prof Michael Fitzgerald o Dudlin’s Trinty College, Darwin had an extraordinary attention to detail but had difficulties with social interaction. Prof Fitzgerald reckons that Darwin was suffering from a behavioral disorder. . The researcher will tell the annual meeting of the Royal College of Psychiatrists' Faculty of Academic Psychiatry that Darwin was probably suffering from Aspergers syndrome. "It is suggested that the same genes that produce autism and Aspergers syndrome are also responsible for great creativity and originality," the Telegraph quoted the professor, as saying. "Aspergers syndrome gave Darwin the capacity to hyperfocus, the extra capacity for persistence, the enormous ability to see detail that other people missed, the endless energy for a lifetime dedication to a narrow task, and the independence of mind so critical to original research," he added. . Prof Fitzgerald believes that Darwin was a solitary child, and his emotional immaturity and fear of intimacy extended to adulthood. Professor Fitzgerald said: "Darwin had a massive capacity to observe, to introspect and to analyze. From adolescence he was a massive systematize, initially of insects and other specimens which he catalogued. He had a tremendously visual brain. "He spent eight years studying barnacles, and wrote books on his observations of earthworms and even his own children. He was a rather obsessive-compulsive and ritualistic man. "Creativity is extremely complex, and so far no theory or model of brain function has been able to explain it fully. But I hope that future progress in understanding the basis of autism may lead to a better understanding of autistic creativity and creativity in general." Source-ANI LIN . I look back and cannot help but wonder why my world seemed/seems so far away from yours at times – like a kind of disconnect! . I grew up learning through the movies, maybe a good choice considering my childhood. I would watch and learn, listen, hear and feel the emotions that were somehow missing in my life. A place where I felt safe, not judged, no one to notice my differences, no one to empty them out like rubbish. My fantasies could just for a while be my reality, of cause this could be a very dangerous cocktail, even maybe for a disastrous ending. . No surprise real life at times seems harsh and never lived up to my visions of how it should be. The reality far too often hurtful pain, crushed at every turn. At times it felt like a new flower desperate for attention, I blossomed, was there but no one noticed, no one seem to care and never watered, nurtured - so I slowly faded away, and not only in my vast imagination, I was not wanted and at very least definitely not understood. . I still fell at times life itself has somehow let me down, not been there for me, and not even tried to understand my misunderstood difference! – cheated from maybe what should have been. I had so many hopes and dreams, so why wasn’t my life like the ones with the happy endings, the movies! . My undiagnosed ASD mother I feel was never contented to this world, a world that especially in her day just did not understand or allow her differences. Which often caused a huge gap, from her life and reality at times. Maybe her dream world was so much better, I guess it had to be. A place she often preferred to be, sadly never able to be there even for me. I also know her dreams, being detracted at times kept her on this earth longer than she could every want to of lived in her own isolation or of been happy with. . Maybe being a mother helped her somehow, I so hope so now. But I cannot help but feel I never helped her alienation or pain, as a child I just wanted a mother, probably more so than most to guide me, But I had to help guide her and then resented her at times, some think of course I I regret now. Of course I cannot help but wonder if why she never seemed to love me. But maybe if I and more of us understood back then she would still be here today. I only found my mother when I found my true self, but to late for my mother who I lost before I could help her understand, her pain was also mine until I discovered self.. . Sadly I cannot help but wonder did the false dreams of reality, the movies help exclude her. Maybe if she had known no different she would of conformed like many before, but what sort of life what that of been! . . Michael Jackson RIP his record "They don't really care about us" kind of speaks for itself really, I can relate in a way to Micheal Jackson how he felt alone, alienated in this world, his struggles reminds me of my continual battle to want to be a apart of this world and how hard it can be for so many of us on the autism spectrum at times... . .

Comment by GUEST on 2009-01-27 16:31:15 Hi Alyson, you are living out your fantasy, and your dreams. you've helped a whole lot of people, not just myself. You've made my real-life fantasy become real for me. Life will give you a happy ending, even if it seems harsh at times. You will find fake, or plastic people. I often still find them kind of people around, who pretend to be my friend, then stick it right to me. But I have also met real, caring people in my life. I have only two, or three real, true friends. Well four, which makes you a true friend of mine too. Don't look back, just keep looking onward. I'm sure you've made a whole lot of people believe in themselves, and not just Aspies, or Auties either. I'm so very sure of that. You really don't understand the impact you have on others, but it's about time you do. I"ve read a lot on your website, and believe me, you have a THIRD-EYE. I do know that much, and you are so much greater than a simple, blooming flower. You are a blossomed tree of hope and prosparity to others. I'm so sure, you've saved my tortured mind, not only from regret of not saying goodbye to my ever loving Mom, but you make me feel so bright, like a white light, I've gotten my chance to shine, and all that you do for other's will come back for you sooner or later. Karma doesn't forget, it just makes you wait. Believe me, you will be the one, who shines much brighter in the end. You will even blackout my bright, white light, when yours becomes so bright, nothing will be able to escape its luminescence. The sun will even go black, when you shine. Believe me, I'm telling you the truth. You are so damned gifted, and so very wise. I know your light will shine ever so bright. You will rise greater than you can ever imagine right now!! You just better hold on tight, because, you will even amaze yourself one day... I really hope you do understand what I'm saying to you, they aren't just words, I speek, I'm also real, living proof of such. You've helped me get to that final leg of my journey onto something, much greater than myself. You've saved my mind, thus you saved my soul from my own madness. I really hope these words of encouragement stick to your ribcage, because you've helped me more than I can ever repay, or even find the right kind of simple words, such as Thank You. That to me is only the tip of what you've done for me. You are my Movie Star, and a damn good one. So forget about watching, what you want to be, you are everything to me, and to most, you've touched. I'm sure you will say I'm right someday. You will see everything you've ever wanted to be, and it's all happening right before your very eyes. Just believe that, and you can't ever go wrong. JCR REPLY: Thank you for your kind words but I do not see myself living out my dream or fantasy, I am just telling my story one of many in the hope that I can help others understand, acceptance and allow differently able people to be. I found Aspergers and self far to late in life and feel the first part of my existence on this planet was more a matter of having to survivor, as those around me, including myself never understood the real me until now. That can have a devastating impact and what a waste of a life that could of been. Having children of my own drives me to help instigate change and the thought of my older child or anyone child, person being kept in the dark for so long about there own differences horrifies me. Sadly some doctors still to this day do not diagnosed adults, and I feel they have no right to decide because with out knowing true self, is like a loss of identity. I almost learned to well to fit in and adapt, but I was always playing the part and deep down some think was always missing, a kind of disconnect. Many on the autism spectrum call this the black pit, the deep void that keeps us for fully existing in reality as we are often brought up to believe how it should be. Since finding self that has got easier, but my dark moments continue from time to time, but the black pit is no longer as deep as it was for many years.... unfortunatelly I feel as with many lost souls, much damage has been caused over the years from ignorance of others and simply not be allowed from birth!. | Comment by GUEST on 2009-02-19 04:53:55 Hi Alyson, Congratulations on writing your own book. That's great...even if you write one page a day, you'll have a book in a year or less. Donna Williams was one of my main inspirations also. Thank you for offering to do an on line interview. I'll be glad to answer the questionnaire. I'll send you an email for the questions shortly. Sophia Summers Reply: Still writing the book, I have enough information its a matter of putting it all together, rereading, rewriting, rewriting etc, etc.... And been very busy with helping out on the first annual awareness walk / run here in NZ, apart from just writing about parents with asd for someone else's book... their I go as usual ask me one simply question and I start ranting and over explaining, the times others have said just an excuse, but its just the honest aspie with often a need to release my thoughts! But things are beginning to come together, I guess with any think the more effort the more happens, always prefer to do, rather than discuss.... or do both at once... and at times my obsessive tenancies and not needing so much sleep helps, being a mother another thing, wanting to thrown myself 200% into my asd research writing, being creative and 200% into my family and precious boys, a balance I still at times struggle with..... Look forward to reading your on line interview.... | Comment by Guest on 2008-10-14 19:51:05 A great read, asplanet. Many "Thanks" for sharing | Comment by GUEST on 2009-01-18 18:25:07 Hi Alyson, I'm number 7. Lewis Caroll It's been a long time we haven't spoken. I hope you've been well. My name is Sophia Summers and I've been following your blog for over 8 months now. I have to say that I'm very impressed with the work you've done. If you remember, I wrote the book "Asperger's - If You Only Knew". Now do you remember? I wanted to know if you would do an interview with me regarding my book. My shyness has prevented me from marketing my book in a social setting so I'm taking baby steps. The very thought of appearing on TV or on a talk radio show makes me cringe. That being said, I would appreciate it if you would contact me. I look forward to speaking with you again. Best regards,Sophia Summers www.aspergers-ifyouonlyknew.com REPLY: Hi Sophia, I do remember you and to be honest have not read your book,as since said I would back in I think it was February 2008 I have had so many comments on web site, emails, forum and had people even sending me drafts of there book etc... and I am in fact now in the process of trying to find time to write my own book, about me and my journey...I have also been trying to read more of Donna Williams as the one person who I can so relate to and who makes a lot of sense to me personnally. As a mother with a child on the autism spectrum myself, I guess have lived through your experience, but we all have our own story to tell and hopefully many parents of asd children will benefit greatly from yours... Would be happy to do an on line interview for you, but as have not read book you may want to complete mine instead and tell us more about your books etc.... if you do just email me and I will send questions... also feel feel to come chat on forum any time... as for letting others know about your book, I guess the best way is as I let them know about my site, I answer and help other people, that way your slowly get know, but no easy answers and I can totally understand you not wanting to do radio interviews etc... that scares me also, but I am glad you have found an outlet like myself - writing as sharing will always help someone, good luck, Take care Alyson | Comment by GUEST on 2009-04-12 23:18:24 I thought this information interesting: "Hans Aspergers from 1906 autistic psychopathy," meaning autism (self) and psychopathy (personality disease). The pattern included "a lack of empathy, little ability to form friendships, one-sided conversation, intense absorption in a special interest, and clumsy movements." Asperger called children with AS "little professors" because of their ability to talk about their favorite subject in great detail. He was convinced that many would use their special talents in adulthood. He followed one child, Fritz V., into adulthood. V. became a professor of astronomy and solved an error in Newton’s work he originally noticed as a child. Hans Asperger’s positive outlook contrasts strikingly with Leo Kanner's description of autism, of which Asperger's is often considered to be a high functioning form." Wow that was cool all the best to you all From David rs Greer Ironically, as a child Hans Asperger appears to have exhibited features of the very condition named after him. He was described as a remote and lonely child, who had difficulty making friends. He was talented in language, in particular he was interested in the German poet Franz Grillparzer whose poetry he would frequently quote to his uninterested classmates.
| Comment by Guest on 2009-08-04 21:26:29 20 Things You Didn't Know About ... Genius How do the Nobel Prize winners get so damn smart? 1. The latest winners of the Nobel Prizes -- the big kahuna of genius awards -- will be announced October 5 this year. Were you nominated? To find out, you’ll have to either win or wait 50 years, which is how long the Nobel committee keeps secret the list of also-rans. 2. Nyah, nyah. William Shockley, who won the 1956 Nobel in physics for inventing the transistor, was excluded as a child from a long-term study of genius because his IQ score wasn’t high enough. 3. History repeated itself in 1968 when Luis Alvarez won a Nobel for his work on elementary particles. He had been excluded from the same research program as Shockley. Who set up that study, anyway? 4. The genius study was created in 1928 by Louis Terman at Stanford University, who pioneered the use of IQ tests to identify geniuses, defined by him as those with an IQ greater than 140. 5. None of the children (known as “Termites”) in the study has won a Nobel. 6. Still smart, though: Termite Jess Oppenheimer invented the TelePrompTer, and Norris Bradbury headed the Los Alamos National Laboratory. 7. Many 19th- and 20th-century creative geniuses acquired a reputation for promiscuity. Examples include Richard Feynman, Albert Einstein and Bertrand Russell. 8. One theory suggests that male geniuses are unusually endowed with enthusiasm for risk-taking, which is notoriously testosterone-linked. 9. In 1981 Shockley and eugenicist Robert Klark Graham cofounded the Repository for Germinal Choice in Southern California, a sperm bank dedicated to selling the seed of Nobel Prize winners and other men with a high I.Q. 10. Graham died in 1997. The Repository for Germinal Choice closed in 1999. 11. Being a genius is no guarantee of financial security. A recent study at the Ohio State University Center for Human Resource Research showed that baby boomers with average and low IQs were just as good at saving money as those with high IQs. 12. Albert Einstein is said to have lost most of his Nobel money in bad investments. Anyone can do that. 13. Hans Asperger, an Austrian pediatrician, identified what is now called Asperger’s syndrome: a form of autism marked by intense absorption in a very narrow range of special interests. 14. Asperger believed that there is a link between mathematical and scientific genius and his syndrome, claiming that "for success in science and art, a dash of autism is essential." 15. Sometimes stereotypes are accurate. Norbert Wiener, who invented the field of cybernetics, was the prototype of the absent-minded genius. 16. Once, Weiner forgot he’d driven to a conference, took the bus home, and then reported his car stolen when he didn’t see it in his driveway. 17. In the 1990s Bell Labs found that its most valued and productive electrical engineers were not those endowed with genius but those who excelled in rapport, empathy, cooperation, persuasion and the ability to build consensus. 18. Too much partying? In 2007 researchers at Kyoto University pitted chimpanzees against college students in three memory-based intelligence tests. The highest-scoring chimp beat all the students in the first test, tied with a few in the second test and reigned again in the third. 19. Try pitting him against the chimp. Alex, a gray parrot who died last September at age 31, has been widely billed as the smartest bird ever. Alex could identify 50 objects, seven colors and shapes and quantities of up to six. 20. You, too, can be a genius (maybe). Scientists at the University of Sydney and Macquarie University in Australia say intelligence can be boosted, at least in the short term, by a daily dose of 5 milligrams of creatine, a compound found in muscle tissue. Reply: Thanks for that really interesting, so there is hope for us yet... but truly one of my nephews is a "Genius" but a life I would not wish on any, for me hard enough to fit in, for him never really will, but saying that happy in what he does, way beyond most! | Comment by GUEST on 2009-10-09 06:11:06 Wow. I'm both linguistic AND musical (one doesn't outweigh the other in my case!!) Add to that that I'm also an extroverted Aspie (I'm sure there are others like this out there but the only other one I know personally is my father). Most Aspies I know seem pretty left-brained, as well, whereas the only area (I'm not kidding) that I'm left-brained in is linguistics. Everything else? Right brained. I love music and the arts with an undying passion, yet sci-fi and comic books and video games (all of which I consider "left-brained activities since they have more technical aspects to them) bore me to tears! So am I really an Aspie? Or do I have some yet-to-be-discovered diagnosis? Somebody please provide me answer, I've been DYING to know for the longest time!! REPLY: I feel you are the best person to answer or decide, as their is no one answer but a process of knowledge of discovery! | |
